A FEW THINGS YOU MIGHT BE WONDERING
Tabtongue captures the current tab’s audio on most regular websites with videos, livestreams, podcasts, or courses. Chrome’s internal pages and content that blocks audio capture are not supported. Bilingual clip sharing currently works with YouTube.
22 languages, with Chinese or English on one side of each translation pair, including Japanese, Korean, French, German, and Spanish. Cantonese and Sichuanese are supported as source languages. Not every pair of languages can be translated directly.
Tabtongue does not save audio files. Live audio is sent to the translation service for processing. Pro accounts can opt in to saving transcripts in their own history and delete them later. Anyone with a shared clip link can view its selected captions.
Captions are generated as the audio plays, without waiting for the whole video to finish. The delay depends on your connection, the speech, and the translation service’s response.
Free accounts get 10 minutes of daily translation, bilingual captions, and YouTube clip sharing. Pro adds a higher allowance and optional transcript saving and export. There is no self-service paid upgrade yet.
Install the Chrome extension, open the video, choose your language pair, and press start. Tabtongue captures the tab’s audio and shows the original and translated captions live, about 3 seconds behind the speech. You can also select a range of lines and share them as a bilingual clip link.
Yes — anything playing audio in a Chrome tab, including livestreams, Twitch, podcasts, online classes, and browser-based meetings. It captures the tab’s audio, so it can’t reach the sound of a separate desktop app.
It works on any tab, not only YouTube; it shows the original and its translation together as paired bilingual captions; and it runs on audio that has no captions at all, such as livestreams and podcasts.
THERE’S A WHOLE WORLD WORTH HEARING.
